China education system: China bans written exams in first and second classes

China has announced a ban on written examinations in classes I and II. The decision was taken by the country's government as the latest step to ease pressure on parents and students in a fiercely competitive education system. The BBC report on Monday revealed the news.

Students from China are coming to appear in every class from the first year of primary school to the university. However, the country's education ministry said the pressure on education was harmful to the "physical and mental" health of the students.

The Ministry of Education said in a statement that exams are important for education....(But) some schools impose excessive examinations, putting extra pressure on students.... This situation needs to be rectified.

A statement issued by the Ministry of Education said there is no need to take any written examination in classes I and II of primary schools.  A final test will be conducted every semester in other classes. Mid-term exams will be conducted at Junior High School.  No inter-school or regional level examinations will also be allowed for primary schools.
